The Chennai Police arrested 11 people on April 5, 2025, for the sale of IPL tickets on the black market in continued efforts against illegal activities surrounding the IPL. The arrests were carried out close to the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, where the Chennai Super Kings were batting against the Delhi Capitals.
The accused, aged between 19 and 52 years, were charging passengers against a preorder of tickets in the country. Police seized 34 tickets and arrested the accused. They were selling tickets around the stadium and in places such as Bells Road, Wallajah Road, and Pattabiram Gate. Some tickets were sold for as high as Rs 25,000, three times the original price!
The incident comes in the backdrop of another similar event when 25 people were arrested for the same offense during the previous match against the Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Plainclothes officers have been deployed on match days to keep a watchful eye on the illegal ticket sales. The inquiry is being conducted to see if those arrested are part of a bigger racket.
These measures are an indication of the increasing efforts against illegal resale of IPL tickets so that the average fan gets a fair chance of watching his favorite match.
