As usual, heated scenes in the Rajya Sabha had Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and BJP MP Neeraj Shekhar engaged verbally in charged atmosphere in Parliament. The trouble started during the address by President Droupadi Murmu, when Kharge was discussing the critical economic concerns related to the depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar.
Kharge, who was very distressed about the incident, could not hide his anger after Shekhar interrupted his speech. Kharge said: “I was a companion to your father as well. Took him around. Quiet, quiet, sit quietly… sit quietly.” Neeraj Shekhar, son of late former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar, at that time was in the Samajwadi Party and joined the BJP in 2019.
Kharge Targets The BJP Over Constitution And ‘Manuvad’
More specifically, he cited Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, saying that equality of opportunity was the essence of the Constitution. He added: “It is the Constitution and not the Manusmriti that gives people like her the right to present the budget and participate in the government.” Kharge then added, “We have the right to speak because of the Constitution. Don’t listen to the proponents of ‘Manuvad'”, showing the Manusmriti for emphasis.
Kharge seized the opportunity to criticize Modi on several fronts: development, employment, farmers’ welfare, and federal structure. With the question, “Is it `Amrit Kaal’ or `Vish Kaal’?”
Kharge implied that the BJP’s idea of the present era of governance is in question.
Political Tensions Mounting in Parliament
